In 1910, the company claimed that 85,000 Protectographs were in use.

When the dial is set to a figure, such as 1000,
the machine prints: NOT OVER ONE THOUSAND $1000.

Check protectors were used to prevent alteration of the monetary figures on checks and other financial documents. In some cases, early check protectors were also used to prevent alteration of the payee, signature, and date.

This machine has signs of age. There is considerable rust which you can view by linking to the larger image. It does work and perforates a paper with the amount.
